MillWall's form during the 1950s was bad, and they suffered relegation on a frequent basis. One highlight during this era was on October 5, 1953, when Millwall played Manchester United to mark the opening of their floodlights. A capacity of 25,000 saw The Lions defeat The Red Devils 2 - 1. In the 1958-59 season, Millwall became original members of Division Four. It was not until the early 1960s that things started to change. During this time, they discovered a number of key players, such as goalkeeper Alex Stepney. He later went on to fame with Manchester United, achieving a European Cup Winners medal in 1968.
